What Are the Names of Allah?
The Names of Allah (Al-Asma Al-Husna, the Most Beautiful Names) are the attributes through which Allah has made Himself known to His creation. They reveal His perfection, His mercy, His power and His wisdom. Each Name is a path toward knowing God.
Allah says in the Quran:
"To Allah belong the Most Beautiful Names. So call upon Him by them." (Al-A'raf, 7:180)
The Merit of Learning Them
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah has ninety-nine Names, one hundred less one. Whoever enumerates them (learns them, understands them and acts upon them) will enter Paradise." (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
The Arabic term "ahsaha" (to enumerate) implies far more than mere memorization. Scholars explain that it includes:
- Memorization: knowing the Names by heart
- Understanding: grasping the meaning of each Name
- Supplication: calling upon Allah by His Names according to the situation
- Action: acting in accordance with what each Name implies
