Sourate Ta-Ha (20:25-28)

رَبِّ اشْرَحْ لِي صَدْرِي وَيَسِّرْ لِي أَمْرِي وَاحْلُلْ عُقْدَةً مِنْ لِسَانِي يَفْقَهُوا قَوْلِي

Rabbi ishrah li sadri wa yassir li amri wahlul 'uqdatan min lisani yafqahu qawli

My Lord, expand for me my chest, ease my task for me, and untie the knot from my tongue so that they may understand my speech.

Tafsir

This supplication is that of Prophet Musa (Moses) when Allah ordered him to confront Pharaoh. He asked Allah to expand his chest, ease his task and untie his tongue. It is ideal before any situation requiring eloquence and serenity.

Sourate Az-Zukhruf (43:13-14)

سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ

Subhana alladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin wa inna ila Rabbina la munqalibun

Glory be to Him who has subjected this to us, and we could never have accomplished it by ourselves. And to our Lord we shall surely return.

Tafsir

This verse teaches the believer to glorify Allah for putting means of transportation at their service. It reminds that humans could not master these means by their own power, and that all return is to Allah. It is a supplication of gratitude and humility before any journey.

Sunan Abu Dawud (5096)

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَ الْمَوْلِجِ وَخَيْرَ الْمَخْرَجِ، بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَلَجْنَا وَبِسْمِ اللَّهِ خَرَجْنَا وَعَلَى اللَّهِ رَبِّنَا تَوَكَّلْنَا

Allahumma inni as'aluka khayral-mawliji wa khayral-makhraji, bismillahi walajna wa bismillahi kharajna wa 'alallahi Rabbina tawakkalna

O Allah, I ask You for the goodness of entering and the goodness of leaving. In the name of Allah we enter, in the name of Allah we leave, and upon Allah our Lord we rely.

Sourate An-Naml (27:19)

رَبِّ أَوْزِعْنِي أَنْ أَشْكُرَ نِعْمَتَكَ الَّتِي أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيَّ وَعَلَى وَالِدَيَّ وَأَنْ أَعْمَلَ صَالِحًا تَرْضَاهُ وَأَدْخِلْنِي بِرَحْمَتِكَ فِي عِبَادِكَ الصَّالِحِينَ

Rabbi awzi'ni an ashkura ni'matakal-lati an'amta 'alayya wa 'ala walidayya wa an a'mala salihan tardahu wa adkhilni bi-rahmatika fi 'ibadika as-salihin

My Lord, inspire me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents, and to do good deeds that please You, and admit me by Your mercy among Your righteous servants.

Tafsir

This supplication is that of Prophet Sulayman (Solomon) when he heard the speech of the ant. He smiled and asked Allah to inspire him to gratitude and good deeds. It is perfectly suited for the start of a new job or a new responsibility.

Sunan Abu Dawud (5094)

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أَضِلَّ أَوْ أُضَلَّ، أَوْ أَزِلَّ أَوْ أُزَلَّ، أَوْ أَظْلِمَ أَوْ أُظْلَمَ، أَوْ أَجْهَلَ أَوْ يُجْهَلَ عَلَيَّ

Bismillahi tawakkaltu 'alallah. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika an adilla aw udall, aw azilla aw uzall, aw adhlima aw udhlam, aw ajhala aw yujhala 'alayy

In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from going astray or being led astray, from slipping or being made to slip, from wronging others or being wronged, from behaving ignorantly or being treated ignorantly.

Sourate Al-Imran (3:173)

حَسْبُنَا اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ

Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal-wakil

Allah is sufficient for us and He is the best Disposer of affairs.

Tafsir

This verse describes the believers' response when told that enemies are gathering against them. Instead of fearing, their faith in Allah increases and they declare that Allah is sufficient for them. It is the word of tawakkul (absolute trust in Allah) in the face of any difficulty.

Sourate Al-Imran (3:38)

رَبِّ هَبْ لِي مِنْ لَدُنْكَ ذُرِّيَّةً طَيِّبَةً إِنَّكَ سَمِيعُ الدُّعَاءِ

Rabbi hab li min ladunka dhurriyyatan tayyibatan innaka sami'ud-du'a'

My Lord, grant me from Yourself good offspring. Indeed, You are the Hearer of supplication.

Tafsir

This supplication is that of Prophet Zakariyya who, despite his advanced age, implored Allah to grant him righteous offspring. Allah answered his prayer and gave him Yahya. It shows that no request is impossible for Allah and that He hears every sincere supplication.

Sunan Abu Dawud (5090)

اللَّهُمَّ عَافِنِي فِي بَدَنِي، اللَّهُمَّ عَافِنِي فِي سَمْعِي، اللَّهُمَّ عَافِنِي فِي بَصَرِي، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ

Allahumma 'afini fi badani, Allahumma 'afini fi sam'i, Allahumma 'afini fi basari, la ilaha illa ant

O Allah, grant me health in my body. O Allah, grant me health in my hearing. O Allah, grant me health in my sight. There is no god but You.

Sourate Al-Qasas (28:24)

رَبِّ إِنِّي لِمَا أَنْزَلْتَ إِلَيَّ مِنْ خَيْرٍ فَقِيرٌ

Rabbi inni lima anzalta ilayya min khayrin faqir

My Lord, indeed I am in need of whatever good You would send down to me.

Tafsir

This supplication is that of Prophet Musa when he arrived in Madyan, a stranger without resources, after helping two women water their flock. He expressed his total need toward Allah, who then granted him shelter, work and a wife. It is the supplication of one who places their trust in Allah for their provision.

Sourate Al-Furqan (25:74)

رَبَّنَا هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ أَزْوَاجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّاتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ وَاجْعَلْنَا لِلْمُتَّقِينَ إِمَامًا

Rabbana hab lana min azwajina wa dhurriyyatina qurrata a'yunin waj'alna lil-muttaqina imama

Our Lord, grant us from our spouses and offspring the comfort of our eyes, and make us leaders for the righteous.

Tafsir

This verse is the supplication of the servants of the Most Merciful ('Ibad ar-Rahman) who ask Allah to make their spouses and children a source of joy and piety, and to make them guides for the believers. It is the ideal supplication for those seeking a pious spouse.

Sahih Al-Bukhari (1013)

اللَّهُمَّ حَوَالَيْنَا وَلَا عَلَيْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ عَلَى الْآكَامِ وَالظِّرَابِ وَبُطُونِ الْأَوْدِيَةِ وَمَنَابِتِ الشَّجَرِ

Allahumma hawalayna wa la 'alayna, Allahumma 'alal-akami wadh-dhirabi wa butounil-awdiyati wa manabiti ash-shajar

O Allah, around us and not upon us. O Allah, upon the hills, the mounds, the valleys, and the places where trees grow.
