Al-Isra (17:24)

رَبِّ ارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرًا

Rabbir-hamhuma kama rabbayani saghira.

My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up when I was small.

Tafsir

Ibrahim (14:41)

رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الْحِسَابُ

Rabbana-ghfir li wa li walidayya wa lil-mu'minina yawma yaqumul-hisab.

Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers on the Day when the reckoning will be established.

This supplication of Prophet Ibrahim encompasses forgiveness for himself, his parents and all believers on the Day of Judgment. اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ وَعَافِهِ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ، وَأَكْرِمْ نُزُلَهُ، وَوَسِّعْ مُدْخَلَهُ، وَاغْسِلْهُ بِالْمَاءِ وَالثَّلْجِ وَالْبَرَدِ، وَنَقِّهِ مِنَ الْخَطَايَا كَمَا نَقَّيْتَ الثَّوْبَ الْأَبْيَضَ مِنَ الدَّنَسِ

Allahumma-ghfir lahu warhamhu wa 'afihi wa'fu 'anhu, wa akrim nuzulahu, wa wassi' mudkhalahu, waghsilhu bil-ma'i wath-thalji wal-barad, wa naqqihi minal-khataya kama naqqaytath-thawbal-abyada minad-danas.

O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, grant him safety and pardon. Honor his reception, expand his entrance, wash him with water, snow and hail, and cleanse him of sins as You cleanse a white garment of filth.

اللَّهُمَّ احْفَظْ وَالِدَيَّ وَعَافِهِمَا وَارْزُقْهُمَا الصِّحَّةَ وَالْعَافِيَةَ، اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهُمَا فِي حِفْظِكَ وَأَمَانِكَ وَكَنَفِكَ

Allahumma-hfaz walidayya wa 'afihima warzuqhumas-sihhata wal-'afiyah. Allahumma-j'alhuma fi hifdhika wa amanika wa kanafik.

O Allah, protect my parents, grant them health and wellbeing. O Allah, place them under Your protection, Your security and Your care.

Al-Furqan (25:74)

رَبَّنَا هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ أَزْوَاجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّاتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ وَاجْعَلْنَا لِلْمُتَّقِينَ إِمَامًا

Rabbana hab lana min azwajina wa dhurriyyatina qurrata a'yunin waj'alna lil-muttaqina imama.

Our Lord, grant us from among our spouses and offspring comfort to our eyes and make us a leader for the righteous.

Al-Ahqaf (46:15)

رَبِّ أَوْزِعْنِي أَنْ أَشْكُرَ نِعْمَتَكَ الَّتِي أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيَّ وَعَلَىٰ وَالِدَيَّ وَأَنْ أَعْمَلَ صَالِحًا تَرْضَاهُ وَأَصْلِحْ لِي فِي ذُرِّيَّتِي ۖ إِنِّي تُبْتُ إِلَيْكَ وَإِنِّي مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ

Rabbi awzi'ni an ashkura ni'matakal-lati an'amta 'alayya wa 'ala walidayya wa an a'mala salihan tardahu wa aslih li fi dhurriyyati, inni tubtu ilayka wa inni minal-muslimin.

My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents, and to do righteousness of which You approve. And make righteous for me my offspring. Indeed, I have repented to You, and indeed, I am of the Muslims.

Al-Isra (17:23)

وَقَضَىٰ رَبُّكَ أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوا إِلَّا إِيَّاهُ وَبِالْوَالِدَيْنِ إِحْسَانًا ۚ إِمَّا يَبْلُغَنَّ عِندَكَ الْكِبَرَ أَحَدُهُمَا أَوْ كِلَاهُمَا فَلَا تَقُل لَّهُمَا أُفٍّ وَلَا تَنْهَرْهُمَا وَقُل لَّهُمَا قَوْلًا كَرِيمًا

Wa qada Rabbuka alla ta'budu illa iyyahu wa bil-walidayni ihsana. Imma yablughanna 'indakal-kibara ahaduhuma aw kilahuma fala taqul lahuma uffin wa la tanharhuma wa qul lahuma qawlan karima.

And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age while with you, say not to them a word of disrespect and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.

Virtue

Tafsir

Allah places the command of kindness toward parents immediately after the command of exclusive worship. This verse insists on absolute respect for parents in their old age, forbidding even a simple sigh of impatience, and ordering noble and respectful words toward them.

Ghafir (40:8)

رَبَّنَا وَأَدْخِلْهُمْ جَنَّاتِ عَدْنٍ الَّتِي وَعَدتَّهُمْ وَمَن صَلَحَ مِنْ آبَائِهِمْ وَأَزْوَاجِهِمْ وَذُرِّيَّاتِهِمْ ۚ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ

Rabbana wa adkhilhum jannati 'adninil-lati wa'adtahum wa man salaha min aba'ihim wa azwajihim wa dhurriyyatihim, innaka antal-'Azizul-Hakim.

Our Lord, and admit them to Gardens of Eternity which You have promised them, and whoever was righteous among their parents, their spouses, and their offspring. Indeed, it is You who is the Mighty, the Wise.

Supplication of the angels who bear the Throne for the reunion of believers with their families in Paradise.

Tafsir

This verse reveals that the angels who bear the Throne implore Allah to admit believers and their righteous families into the Gardens of Eden. It shows divine mercy extending beyond the individual to reunite pious families in Paradise.

Nuh (71:28)

رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَلِمَن دَخَلَ بَيْتِيَ مُؤْمِنًا وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ

Rabbighfir li wa li walidayya wa liman dakhala baytiya mu'minan wa lil-mu'minina wal-mu'minat.

My Lord, forgive me and my parents and whoever enters my house as a believer, and the believing men and believing women.

Tafsir

This supplication of Nuh at the end of his life shows his spiritual generosity: he asks forgiveness for himself, his parents, the believers who enter his home and all believing men and women. It is a model of inclusive supplication taught by the Prophets.

Luqman (31:14)

وَوَصَّيْنَا الْإِنسَانَ بِوَالِدَيْهِ حَمَلَتْهُ أُمُّهُ وَهْنًا عَلَىٰ وَهْنٍ وَفِصَالُهُ فِي عَامَيْنِ أَنِ اشْكُرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيْكَ إِلَيَّ الْمَصِيرُ

Wa wassaynal-insana bi walidayhi, hamalathu ummuhu wahnan 'ala wahnin wa fisaluhu fi 'amayni anishkur li wa li walidayk, ilayyal-masir.

And We have enjoined upon man regarding his parents - his mother carried him in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years - Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the final destination.

Tafsir

In this verse, Allah recalls the mother's suffering during pregnancy and nursing, and commands the human being to show dual gratitude: toward Allah first, then toward one's parents. Gratitude toward parents is inseparable from gratitude toward the Creator.
