In Times of Distress

In anguish and distress

1
Al-Bukhari (6346)

La ilaha illallahul-'Adhimul-Halim. La ilaha illallahu Rabbul-'Arshil-'Adhim. La ilaha illallahu Rabbus-samawati wa Rabbul-ardi wa Rabbul-'Arshil-Karim.

None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, the Magnificent, the Forbearing. None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, Lord of the Magnificent Throne. None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, Lord of the heavens, Lord of the earth, and Lord of the Noble Throne.

Virtue

The Prophet ﷺ used to say this supplication at times of distress.

Al-Anbiya (21:87)

La ilaha illa Anta, Subhanaka inni kuntu minaz-dhalimin.

None has the right to be worshipped but You. Glory be to You! Indeed, I was among the wrongdoers.

Virtue

The supplication of Prophet Yunus (Jonah) ﷺ. No Muslim calls upon Allah with it for anything except that Allah answers him.

Tafsir

This verse relates the supplication of Prophet Yunus (Jonah) when he found himself in the belly of the whale, in the darkness of the sea. He acknowledged his mistake, glorified Allah and implored His help. Allah saved him from this trial, showing that sincere repentance and glorifying Allah are the path to salvation in any distress.

Muslim (918)

Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un. Allahumma'-jurni fi musibati wakhluf li khayran minha.

Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return. O Allah, reward me in my affliction and replace it with something better.

Virtue

Whoever says this upon being afflicted, Allah will reward him and replace it with something better.
